Bruno Fernandes’ unexpected substitution in Nottingham Forest’s loss is explained by Ruben Amorim.
After Manchester United lost to Nottingham Forest 3-2 on Saturday, captain Bruno Fernandes left the pitch as the Red Devils were behind.
Some of United’s regular stars had a hard evening at Old Trafford as the visitors’ two goals in the second half silenced Ruben Amorim’s team before they could react. The headlines on Saturday night were dominated by goalie Andre Onana’s subpar performance, which cast doubt on this new United squad. Rasmus Hojlund was the next to score after Forest took the lead thanks to an early goal from Nikola Milenkovic. However, Fernandes was unable to negate two strikes from Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White and he was replaced him a few minutes later, a tactical move that raised concerns among United supporters.
Amorim responded, “I understand that Bruno is a danger near the box,” when questioned about his choice. “He was worn out from transition, but he had scored one goal. I could have let Bruno Fernandes [remain], but I thought Mason Mount would be a better option since he is technically skilled and can score goals. We also needed new players. If you watched the game, you would have noticed that there were transitions; if you lost the ball and let another goal, it was over. I therefore made use of every substitution. I thought Bruno was a little worn out after all the games. Mason Mount was mine.
and attempted to move him and Josh [Zirkzee] closer to Rasmus so that they could ultimately try anything.”
United is now in 13th place in the Premier League standings, but if they can’t improve on their recent play, they may fall further down the table. They will play Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League midweek before facing their fiercest rivals, Manchester City, in the league on Sunday.
